Wind Turbine Cost
How Much Does A Wind Turbine Cost Normally?
The wind turbine cost will depend
on several different factors. A wind turbine is composed of
several different elements that allow you to harness wind power
and transform it into electricity or another type of power. The
actual cost of the wind turbine will differ depending on the
rotor diameters, generator size and tower heights.
Wind turbines are used around the world
to harness wind power and convert it into electricity. Denmark
has about 5, 500 wind turbines in the country that produces 3,
000 MW of wind power. California has thousands of wind turbines
that are in various parts of the state, mainly in Palm Springs
and outside of San Francisco. The greater the kW you are
looking to produce the greater wind turbine costs associated
with it. Some of the most expensive wind turbines that generate
700kW can cost upwards of 500, 000 USD. How ever home owners
looking to incorporate wind power for their home would be
looking for a smaller wind turbine. A smaller wind turbine that
generates between 100 to 200 kW could cost between 150, 000 -
200, 000 USD.

Interestingly enough the price increase
when looking at larger wind turbines is more cost effective. If
you go from 150 kW to 600 kW the price does not quadruple, but
instead it triples. This is because it is not much more
difficult to make a larger wind turbine then it is to make a
smaller one, simply more material is involved, the physics and
mechanics is the same.
A general rule of thumb to remember when
purchasing and installing wind turbine is that it will cost you
around 1, 000 USD per kW. Energy conversion for wind turbines
is measured in kW per hour. Most of the price competition falls
around the 1, 000 kW range.
There are more costs involved then just
buying the wind turbine there are other installation costs that
need to be factored in to the cost. Additional installation
costs include wind turbine foundations, road construction,
transformer, current from the electrical grid to the turbine,
and cabling costs.
All of these costs are variable as the
soil will dictate the type of foundation needed. If you are
putting in a wind turbine where there are no roads then you
will have additional costs as a road is created. Transportation
of the wind turbine can also be expensive as a mobile crane may
be necessary.
When looking into all costs it actually
works in your favor to install many wind turbines rather then
just one as connecting several wind turbines in one area means
you can do everything in bulk. Instead of building several
roads to many different locations all you need to do is build
one road and hire one mobile crane.
The newest type of wind turbines are
those being built off shore. This allows areas that have high
populations the ability to utilize wind power where there isn't
land for the wind turbines. Denmark has the largest offshore
wind farm at Horns Rev.
Individuals have been using wind power
for centuries as mills used wind power to crush grain. These
historic buildings are known as wind mills. Wind turbines are
highly desirable as wind power is the most efficient type of
renewable energy as it has no by products or pollutants
associated with it and as long as the earth is moving and the
sun is heating up the atmosphere there will be wind.
