Off Grid Living
What Is Off Grid Living Really Like?
Off grid living seems so peaceful and
productive these days. When you think about not relying upon
electricity and being self-sufficient, it is very easy to
picture a nice home tucked out in the woods, completely
self-reliant and at ease. Yet, this is not the reality for the
majority of people who are working toward
self-sufficiency.
For starters, very few people today can
afford to completely go off grid right away. They usually start
with an affordable solar system or maybe some wind mills, and
they build it up over time. This means for many years they may
only be partially dependent on solar energy and life may seem
quite ordinary.
Most neighborhoods do not have homes on
every block with solar panels on the roof or wind mills in the
backyard, though this could be reality in the near future. As
these alternative energy systems become more efficient and more
affordable, more people are drawn to them. Much of the interest
may be fueled by the idealized perception of what it is like to
live off the grid.

What most people do not realize is that
living off the grid means more than popping solar panels or a
solar roof on top of your home. It really refers to complete
self-reliance. This means you provide not only your own
electricity but other needs as well, such as water. It means
you cut your dependence on other sources and rely upon
yourself.
When this happens, most people will
learn the value of a dollar. They learn the value of a single
drop of water or second's worth of electricity as well. This is
because you have to follow one big rule at all times: use less
than you can create.
That means you have to completely
understand how much energy you can create for yourself, and
control your consumption so you do not run out or go beyond the
mans of your system.
The more electricity you use the bigger
system you are going to need. Most people cannot afford to
simply bring in a system large enough to cover their current
expenditure, so the initial cost forces them to make some
lifestyle changes.
What do you do right now to conserve the
expense on your electric bill? You will not be free of those
things if you go off grid. Actually, those measures may need to
be enforced more strictly or added to in order to stay within
the means of your new system.
It is true that living off the grid can
bring more peace and a rather simplistic life for some people.
Yet, you have to consider what living in that peaceful home
away from civilization would mean. Think of the things you
would have to give up if that were really your life.
Today, the majority of people who strive
toward off grid living are not isolated out in the woods. They
are every day people trying to cut expenses, help the
environment, and depend on themselves in the case of something
major happening to the main electrical grid. They are usually
not completely off grid and they may live ordinary lives just
like anyone else around them.
